Big hats and roses, Kentucky Derby highlights tradition

With the Kentucky Derby underway at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, here are some of the traditions being celebrated.

The 2024 Kentucky Derby is almost here.

Race officials mapped out positions for the 20 participants on Saturday, officially assigning each horse to the starting gate. The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports will begin for the 150th time in its history on Saturday, May 4 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

On paper, each of the 20 entries has a 5% mathematical chance of winning each race. In reality, Entry No. 5 has historically been one of the best starting positions, with 10 winners starting from there. Conversely, the No. 17 has never produced a winner in 44 races.

Last year’s winner, Mage, started eighth and was the ninth winner in Kentucky Derby history to start there.

This is the number each of the 20 horses will be wearing on Saturday.
