Lawsuit against Harvard to end pro-admissions program for children of former graduates

Days after a US Supreme Court ruling ended affirmative action at US universities, including Harvard, the civil rights group to take legal action Against the prestigious University of Cambridge in Massachusetts, which, according to recent data, forced the end of a program that admitted six times more children of former graduates than others.

The lawsuit was brought by a group of civil rights attorneys on behalf of black and Latino groups in New England. He says the program discriminates against students of color by giving unfair incentives to the children of mostly white alumni.

“Why do we reward children for privileges and advantages received by previous generations?” said Ivan Espinosa-Madrigal, executive director of the group. Last name and bank account size are not a measure of eligibility and should not influence the college admissions process. »

In his reaction to the Supreme Court ruling, Joe Biden called for the repeal of the practice, which is in place at many prestigious universities in the United States.

Proponents of the practice say it helps build a community of alumni and encourages donations.
