Liverpool is moving forward with the Dominic Zuboszlai deal

Liverpool are ready to move forward a deal for RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

Newcastle United had previously expressed interest in the 22-year-old, but have now left the way open for Liverpool.

After a deal initially looked tricky after a meeting earlier this week, the dynamic has changed in the past 24 hours and Liverpool seem to have gained confidence that it is possible.

Liverpool and RB Leipzig had already entered into dialogue with Fabio Carvalho’s season-long loan move to the Bundesliga club expected to complete today (Friday) and a deal for Szoboszlai was almost inevitable.

Szoboszlai has a €70m (£60.1m, $75.9m) release clause in his contract – with conflicting reports about it expiring – but regardless the move will involve significant financial outlay.

He is the latest attacking midfield option to be considered by the club and fits the profile they are looking for in the window, following a previous pursuit of England international striker Mason Mount who is now close to joining Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Szoboszlai is highly minded by Liverpool amid interest in Jefren Thuram and Romeo Lafia. This move has nothing to do with Fabio Carvalho’s proposed loan move to the Bundesliga club.

Szoboszlai has been an important player for Leipzig since his transfer from Red Bull Salzburg in 2021. He played 48 matches during the 2022-23 season, scoring 10 goals.

He plays regularly for Hungary, and also has 32 caps for his country.
