The polls conducted from July 26 to August 2, Mme Harris is slightly ahead or tied in six of the seven key states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. In Nevada, Mr Trump won by a narrow margin. That’s a marked shift from the same polls taken in May — when Joe Biden was still in the race — that showed Donald Trump leading by a solid or equal margin in all seven key states.

North Carolina’s turnaround is particularly striking. Mr. Trump had his biggest lead there in May, and the candidates are now neck and neck.

New research also suggests that third-party candidates may be less important. Independent Robert F. The inclusion of candidates like Kennedy Jr. and the Green Party’s Jill Stein did not change the overall results in key states.

    A redesigned race

These results are similar to recent polls The New York Times/Siena College, which is Mme Harris has narrow leads in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, another indicator of how the presidential race has reshaped itself in the space of a few weeks.

The Cook polls, taken shortly after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed his successor, Kamala Harris, showed the vice president’s approval rating rising 13 percentage points as voters recognized the new Democratic nominee.

Much of this progress has been made by Democrats, but Mme Harris has also made progress among independently identifying men, although this group views him more negatively than positively overall.

Donald Trump has good news. Undecided voters, who make up a relatively small share of the electorate, are on economic policy and border security. They trust Trump more and are more sensitive to inflation than the electorate as a whole.

They are also very concerned about M skillsme Harris will fulfill his duties as Mr. Trump only needs to accomplish as much. If elected, the 78-year-old Mr. Trump will be the longest-serving president ever.
