The expression “positive discrimination” (Affirmative action in English) refers to institutional efforts to redress racial inequalities. In the United States, policies related to this concept have been attacked or dismantled by conservative politicians and judges, particularly in the education sector. That doesn’t mean racial disparities have disappeared or that the majority of Americans don’t enjoy “affirmative action” of various kinds, as Michael Obama discussed during his memorable speech Tuesday evening, which he did not name, to a specific former president who benefited from it. . I quote it:
“Kamala has shown her loyalty to this nation by not harboring anger and bitterness, leading a life of service and opening doors of opportunity for others. She understands that most of us will never have the grace to fail… we will never benefit from the sure act of generational wealth.
“If we go bankrupt or fall into a crisis in a business, we don’t get a second, third or fourth chance. If things don’t go our way, we don’t have the luxury of complaining or deceiving others… We don’t have the right to change the rules to always win. If we see a mountain in front of us , we wouldn’t expect an escalator waiting to go up.
“No, we bow. We go to work. In America, we are taking action. »
