Raiders quarterback Michael Gallup retires from NFL after six seasons

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Michael Gallup, who signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders on April 30 and was expected to compete for the team’s third-place starting quarterback spot, decided to retire Tuesday, the day before the team’s first training camp.

Gallup, 28, participated in the Raiders’ organizational workouts and training camp during the offseason. Gallup spent six years in the NFL, catching 266 passes for 3,744 yards and 21 scores with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Raiders also announced that left back Colton Miller, a six-year starter who missed a career-high four games last season and underwent shoulder surgery in the offseason, will begin camp on the physically disabled list.

Also listed were receiver Jalen Jetton, a five-year player who caught 71 passes for 1,112 yards and seven scores for the Los Angeles Chargers who signed a one-year, $1.9 million deal with the Raiders on May 6, linebacker Darren Butler, guard Jake Johanning and second-round pick Jackson Powers-Johnson, who is expected to compete for playing time at left guard. Powers-Johnson suffered a shoulder injury in regulation practice, but a source familiar with the situation said the injury was not the reason he started his first training camp on the PUP list.
