When I first heard that a “Twister” sequel was in the works, I was a little skeptical. The original film, with its groundbreaking (for the time) special effects and intense storm-chasing sequences, left a lasting impact on me when I was younger and wanted to chase tornadoes myself (yes, that was a real passion of mine). It’s one of those movies that still goes with me when I need a dose of nostalgia and pure adrenaline.
So the idea of revisiting that world years later had me eagerly anticipating and cautiously wondering if lightning might strike twice. However, when I saw “Twisters” in theaters, I was pleasantly surprised that it managed to carve out its own niche as a modern disaster epic. It literally blew my mind.
I’m even more excited to watch it again now that it’s available on VOD platforms. Whether you’re a fan of the original film or new to the series, this is a must-see, and here’s why you should watch it now…
What is the movie “Twisters”?
“Twisters” is a standalone sequel set in the world of “Twister,” one of my favorite disaster movies of all time. The new story centers on Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a former storm hunter who was traumatized after surviving a devastating hurricane while in college. Now, years later, she studies natural disasters on computers in New York City instead of confronting them head-on.
However, her boyfriend Javi (Anthony Ramos) encourages her to return to the open plains to test a new tracking system that can stop tornadoes after they form. She then meets social media star Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), who is determined to pull off the most exciting and dangerous experiment ever. Of course, getting so close to tornadoes has its own immeasurable risks.
“Twisters” is the perfect summertime entertainment with popcorn.
For me, “Twisters” is the ultimate summer movie. It’s the kind of movie that reminds me why I love going to the movies in the first place. There’s something about its mix of high-stakes action, whirlwind special effects, and just the right amount of humor that makes it the perfect escape from reality—especially when it’s hot outside. But that doesn’t mean it’s just for summer. Even on a cold, rainy winter day, I’d enjoy watching it live with a warm beverage.
From the moment you see a tornado on screen, “Twisters” builds an immense amount of tension to the point where you’ll hold your breath. The tension mounts as the characters race against nature, and no matter how many times I watch it in the future, I’ll be just as immersed in the action. But what makes this film stand out in 2024 is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Sure, there’s drama and danger, but there’s also a sense of fun that runs through the entire film. After all, it’s not exactly “realistic.”
I’m not saying that “Twisters” is the best movie ever made. It certainly has its weak moments, like the very annoying soundtrack and the sometimes silly dialogue between Kate and Tyler, but regardless of those moments, I can guarantee that you will have a lot of fun watching it.
It seems the audience agrees with me too as viewers rated it 91%. rotten tomatoesSome commented that it was “a great movie full of action and humor,” while others said that it “will make your heart race.” If there’s one negative thing I agree with, it’s probably the “lack of chemistry between Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones,” but they still deliver strong performances on screen.
You need to stream “Twisters”
If you weren’t excited to see “Twisters” when it was in theaters, it’s time to watch it from the comfort of your couch. As a fan of loud disaster movies, I can honestly say that this movie delivers on all counts. It’s full of suspense, suspense, surprisingly poignant moments, and visuals that heighten the tension.
