A House of Commons inquiry into Capital Storming has recommended criminal charges against Donald Trump for calling for sedition and conspiracy against the US government. This event, which qualifies as a historical event, does not guarantee that an investigation will take place.

“If I’m not mistaken, this is the first time that a congressional special investigation committee has recommended criminal charges of sedition against a president or former president,” Rafael said. Jacob, an American specialist in politics and associate researcher at the Raoul-Tundurant Chair.

On January 6, 2021, Donald Trump’s supporters stormed into Congress to block the certification of results, claiming that, like him, the presidential election was stolen from him by Joe Biden.

Following this incident, five people were killed.

Following an 18-month investigation, a House of Commons inquiry into the capital attack on Monday recommended criminal charges against the former president, including inciting sedition and conspiracy against the US government. Seven Democrats and two Republicans voted unanimously in favor of the recommendations.

Let’s see if it goes further

The US Department of Justice must establish whether or not charges will be filed against Trump. These reasons could lead to prison terms and a ban from holding any public office, as the former president has announced he will re-enter the race for the White House in 2024.

“If he’s charged, if he’s charged, if he’s found guilty, yes, he could go to jail, but because no criminal charges have been filed against him, we’re a long way from that. […] Tomorrow is not the day before we see Trump incarcerated,” he added.

The No. 2 on the commission, Republican Liz Cheney, said her actions showed she was “unfit” to hold the new public office.

He also said that anyone who behaves like this at this time cannot hold a position of power in this country again.

The Justice Department has appointed a special counsel to independently investigate Donald Trump, who will decide whether to prosecute him.

In the context of the Proud Boys investigation

The trial of five members of the far-right extremist group Proud Boys, including leader Enrique Dario (pictured), began in the United States on Monday as jury selection ended.

Members of a group known for their neofascist ideologies were charged with treason in connection with the January 6, 2021 attack on the Washington Capitol.

A group of Donald Trump supporters has been accused of causing chaos in a congressional seat.

Remember that nearly 900 people who participated in the violence were prosecuted and in some cases convicted.

In sections including sedition, convicts can be jailed for up to 20 years.

Of the four charges, calling for sedition is the most serious. Keep in mind that the perpetrators of this rebellion were often already tried and convicted.

“This is a sign that there is a court that has recognized this crime. Whether Donald Trump was involved in this crime remains to be determined. The members of the committee believe that the evidence they have presented is sufficient to prove it,” explains columnist Pierre Martin. Register and Professor of American Politics at the University of Montreal.

Charges of conspiracy against the US government, obstruction of official proceedings and making false statements have also been issued.

Donald Trump “lost the 2020 election and knew it, but he tried to stay in power,” said Democrat Benny Thompson, chairman of the House inquiry.

What the major interested party has to say

Before charges were officially filed against him, Donald Trump had already spoken out against the commission’s upcoming recommendation on his site Truth Social.

The former US president described members of the parliamentary inquiry committee as “thugs”.

Mr. Trump defended his January 6, 2021 speech and his other actions that day as “moderate and loving”.

At the time, he called on his supporters to “fight like devils” rather than overtly asking them to occupy the Capitol.

On social networks, we read many positive comments regarding the recommendations of the parliamentary committee, while others continued to defend the former US president.
