    COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AFP) – Minnesota Gov. Tim Walls and senator from ohio JD Vance The two candidates agreed to debate each other on October 1, setting up a matchup between the two potential vice presidential candidates as early voting begins in some states. General Elections.

    CBS News reported on its X channel on Wednesday that the network had invited both Vance and Walz to debate in New York City, and offered four possible dates — Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, and Oct. 8 — as options.

    Walz retweeted the message from his campaign account, “See you on October 1st, JD.” It was followed by a message from the Harris-Walz campaign, which said Walz “looks forward to debating JD Vance — if he shows up.”

    Vance announced on X that he would accept the invitation on October 1. He also challenged Walz to a meeting on September 18.

    Officials with the Kamala Harris-Walz campaign did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Vance’s acceptance of the earlier debate, which he said would be on CNN, or whether Walz would participate in that debate as well.

    CNN representatives confirmed that Vance had accepted the network’s invitation to participate in the debate.

    CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell and Face the Nation anchor Margaret Brennan will moderate the debate, scheduled for Oct. 1, the network said.

    There was some doubt whether Walz and Vance would debate before the general election on November 5. In just the past few weeks, the president Joe Biden He left the campaign and the Democrats chose him. Harris To drive their ticket.

    Vance focused heavily on Harris, who he was scheduled to debate before Biden left the race, and he took aim at Walz, including questioning the retired National Guard officer’s service record.

    Former President Donald TrumpBiden, the Republican presidential nominee, said he wanted to discuss Vance Walz on CBS, which was discussing possible dates for the meeting.

    Trump said he has negotiated several other dates for the debate, on three different networks. Fox News has also proposed a debate between Harris and Trump on Sept. 4, and NBC News plans to air one on Sept. 25.

    Harris said during her appearance in Michigan that she was “happy to have this conversation” about an additional debate.
