Solar eclipse 2024: glasses and tips for preparing

Here's what you need to know before you see a solar eclipse.

    The problem has been resolved

On Monday, April 8, the sky will temporarily darken for millions of Americans in the path of totality during the 2024 solar eclipse.

This is the first total solar eclipse to pass across North America in seven years, and the next one will not be seen from the contiguous United States until August 23, 2044, according to NASA.

The exact time a solar eclipse will occur will vary, depending on the state and time zone. Of course, the visibility of the eclipse will also depend on Monday's weather.

Whether you're experiencing the path of totality from home or traveling to witness it in person, here's what to expect at the exact time of the eclipse.

What time is the 2024 solar eclipse?

The eclipse will begin in Mexico at approximately 11:07 AM PT, Monday, April 8, before crossing into Texas at 1:27 PM PT. It will end in Maine at 3:35 PM EST. Even if you are not in the path of totality and will not see the total eclipse, you may still see a proportion of it.

To find out exactly when the eclipse will occur in your area, you can search the USA TODAY database by zip code for a viewing guide.

Even if you still see a small portion of the eclipse, you can use the database to look up the time, duration, peak and percentage in your area.

Here are the major cities in each state where you can expect to experience the total eclipse in the U.S. (note that the times included do not take into account the start and end time of the partial eclipse):

    • Dallas, Texas: 1:40 – 1:44 PM CST
    • Idabel, Oklahoma: 1:45-1:49 p.m. CST
    • Little Rock, Arkansas: 1:51 – 1:54 PM CST
    • Poplar Bluff, Missouri: 1:56 – 2:00 PM CST
    • Paducah, KY: 2-2:02 PM CST
    • Carbondale, IL: 1:59 – 2:03 PM CST
    • Evansville, Indiana: 2:02-2:05 PM CST
    • Cleveland, Ohio: 3:13-3:17 PM EST
    • Erie, PA: 3:16-3:20 PM EST
    • Buffalo, NY: 3:18-3:22 PM EST
    • Burlington, Vermont: 3:26-3:29 PM EST
    • Lancaster, New Hampshire: 3:27-3:30 PM EST
    • Caribou, Maine: 3:32-3:34 PM EST

Where will the 2024 total solar eclipse occur?

The eclipse begins in Mexico, then crosses to the United States through the state of Texas. From there, the College Trail, about 115 miles wide, extends northeast, passing through 13 states. In the United States, the total eclipse will end in Maine, but the eclipse will eventually enter the Maritime Provinces of Canada.

Other major cities along the path of totality include San Antonio and Austin, Texas; Indianapolis; Rochester and Syracuse, New York.
