Woman’s leg amputated after airport incident

Woman’s leg amputated after airport incident

A woman got part of her leg amputated after she got stuck on a moving walkway at an airport in Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday.

The 57-year-old Thai woman was on her way to the gate of her flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat province when the incident happened, Global News reported.

Authorities believe the unidentified woman fell on the platform. The force of the fall would have lifted the protective shield of the moving corridor.

According to the “Bangkok Post”, the victim’s left leg was caught in the machine. The airport medical team had to amputate his leg above the knee on the spot.

He was later referred to a local hospital for further treatment.

The medical team at the hospital soon confirmed that the woman’s leg could not be reattached, but she requested a transfer to a hospital that could do so.

In a statement posted on their Facebook page, Don Mueang Airport pledged to cover the woman’s medical expenses, along with compensation.

The victim’s son said his family was “shocked” by the events and worried about his mother’s mental health.

“Even though she tries to show that she’s strong through her facial expressions, we know she’s broken because she suddenly lost her leg,” he explained.

The airport manager expressed his deep condolences over the incident. He also pointed out that moving lanes are checked every day, with additional inspections every month. The sidewalk where the incident occurred is closed until further notice. As part of the investigation by the airport management, a team of engineers will come to inspect the mechanism.
