A Chinese man who killed 1,100 of his neighbor’s chickens has been sentenced to six months in prison and a year of probation. China Daily.
On two occasions the accused, identified as Gu, used a flashlight to scare away the chickens, which killed each other.
The beam created a great panic among the birds who rushed to a corner where they trampled each other and tried to flee. 460 of them died during this first incident.
Gu was later arrested by police and forced to pay her 3,000 yuan (about 590 Canadian dollars) in restitution to her neighbor. However, this punishment further frustrated the accused, who repeated his gesture, this time by scaring 640 chickens to death with his flashlight.
In total, officials estimate that 1,100 chickens died, with a total value of 13,840 yuan (2,700 Canadian dollars).
So Gu was convicted of the crime of willfully destroying his neighbor’s property.
The two have been at loggerheads since the chicken farm decided to cut down the trees without informing the neighbours.
