Canada sends naval vessels to the Indo-Pacific region

(OTTAWA) Canada will deploy Royal Canadian Navy ships in the coming days to support Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy, Defense Minister Bill Blair said.

The Department of National Defense announced that HMCS Vancouver will depart for Hawaii to participate in the “Rim of the Pacific 2024” exercise, known as RIMPAC, which it says is the world’s largest joint and integrated maritime exercise.

HMCS Max Bernays, MV Asterix and a ground crew of about 300 members from the Canadian Armed Forces will also be at RIMPAC.

This is the second year that the navy has deployed three warships in the region, the ministry says.

After RIMPAC 2024, HMCS Vancouver will sail west across the Pacific Ocean for Operation HORIZON, a forward reserve mission in the Indo-Pacific region.

Announcing the Navy’s participation while attending the Shangri-La Security Forum in Singapore, Mr. Blair said in a statement that the security and stability of the Indo-Pacific region is vital to Canada’s future and that the deployment shows the country.
