Super Mario Maker players have finally done it – they've beaten every legitimate level uploaded to the original game before the servers shut down. The problem is that they already achieved victory last week, and now they can only celebrate the achievement after the creator of the latest level came forward to reveal that it was fake.

Even today, the final level appears to be “Trimming Weeds,” a ridiculously difficult stage that's only a few seconds long but requires near-inhuman precision to complete. Well, actually, it took more than just “near” inhuman skills. Ahoyo, the original creator of the level, revealed today that it was loaded using gadget-assisted speedrunning techniques that allowed him to clear the stage and load it without proving a human could beat it.

We did it! Super Mario Maker 1 is complete! The Last Dance was the final level, beaten by @Yamada_SMM2. Much love to everyone who has supported us on this journey. GG! Please do not harass anyone about this situation. … https://t.co/GNZfTzCrkYMarch 22, 2024

Some members of Team 0%, the group working to beat all of Super Mario Maker's levels before the servers shut down on April 8, already suspect that the level may have been uploaded through some illicit means. But senior members of the group quickly rejected this idea, especially since the means to create TAS for the Wii U did not appear to exist.

Except for those tools actually an act Out. “Someone sent me a message about a TAS they were working on for the Wii U,” Ahoyo says in a message posted on the website. Team 0% disagreement. “In a video they sent, it looked like they made it work, but they told me they were abandoning the project. My friend replicated the TAS after two days of construction.” And so Trimming the Herbs was downloaded through this tool.

“I'm sorry for the drama I caused within the community, and I feel sorry for the ordeal, but at least it was interesting,” Ahoyo says. “But in the end the truth is what's most important. Congratulations to Team 0% on their well-deserved achievement! SMM has been cleared, and the last dance is the final level!”

Already, the community is celebrating last week's elimination of The Last Dance by a player named Yamada as the final victory over Super Mario Maker. It's a hell of an accomplishment, especially considering how many phases remain at the start of the project and how close it ultimately ends up being to the final April 8 deadline.

But here's the thing: weed trimming wasn't the only TAS level Ahoyo loaded. The tool was also used to load a stage called Bombs5 – a level that human players were able to legitimately pass. Many players are now committed to continuing their weed cutting attempts until the last minute. After all, what better bragging rights than being the one to beat Super Mario Maker's impossible level?
