Shania Twain She proved what makes her a music icon when she accepted the award and performed a medley of her songs on Tuesday (December 6). People’s Choice Awards.
One of her performance highlights—which included her 1995 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Any Man of Mine,” and her late-’90s crossover pop smash “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I feel like a woman!” and her last single “waking dream” — when the pink-haired singer replaced Brad Pitt’s famous spoken word line from “Impress” with a fellow Canadian star.
“Well, you’re Ryan Reynolds!” she said lightly as the cameras cut to surprise dead list The star, who was on hand to accept the People’s Icon award later in the evening. reynolds mouths, “Oh my god me?!” from the audience.
In addition to performing, Twain also gave a heartfelt acceptance speech where she accepted the Music Icon Award from her friend, actor Billy Porter.
“Am I dreaming? She told me to begin.” Thank you so much for giving me this award and for highlighting my work as having had such an impact. I’m not sure if it’s the right thing to say, but that’s always been my wish: to inspire people with my music. I always miss my mother now in these moments of life. She would have loved watching her little girl live this moment right now. But my fans, my friends, my team – you guys are the ones who really fill that space. Not my mom’s place, but you’re here with me and you celebrate, we celebrate together, and you’ve made me feel loved and privileged my entire working life. And I will always be grateful for that, thank you.
She added, “From an early age, I turned to songwriting as a form of escapism.” “This is where I go. It never occurred to me how powerful lyrics can be when you’re able to record them and share them with the whole world. It’s such an honor to be respected as a songwriter. But my greatest honor is knowing that people have found strength and inspiration In what I have to sing, in my work. So thank you, I love you for that.”
She also highlighted her role as a fashion icon, noting that early in her career, she would just bundle clothes with what she had. “I just went to my closet and picked everything I had, or I went to a department store and picked the budget stuff, because I didn’t have a big budget. With sharp scissors and a lot of imagination, I cut and pulled and cut…and hoped for the best.”
Twain concluded the speech with some inspiring words for her young fans. “I just want to say: Geeddy, kids. Embrace your individuality and your crazy ideas. Just be brave. Let’s remember, there’s strength in numbers, we’re in this together, love is love, and when the door slams in your face, do a weird run and jump on your door and kick it.” Down!You won’t regret it.
