Inside out 2 The box office was on fire on Friday after opening with an impressive $13 million in Thursday evening previews, well ahead of expectations and putting the film on track to become the first title of 2024 to gross $100 million in its debut.

In fact, traffic is so strong that the Pixar and Disney title is now expected to gross at least $130 million in North America, one of the top five openings ever for an animated film, without adjusting for inflation. By Friday night, rival studios were offering estimates of $140 million or more, but Disney and Pixar are taking a more cautious approach until they see the day’s final number (Friday’s tally should be at least $55 million).

A fellow Pixar release Incredibles 2 It won best opening animated feature ($182.7 million), followed by Illumination and Universal’s Super Mario Bros movie ($146.4 million), Pixar Find my role ($135.1 million) and Walt Disney Animation Frozen II ($130.3 million).

Inside out 2The film’s $13 million preview gross is the biggest of the year so far in a coveted win for the sluggish box office. The $13 million also overwhelmed moving tentpoles like Illumination Minions: Rise of Gru ($10.8 million) and Pixar toy story 4 ($12 million). These two films had three-day domestic openings of $107 million and $120.9 million, respectively.

Pixar’s animated tentpole is also generating excitement overseas, where it began rolling out mid-week. Wednesday and Thursday revenue is $22.3 million from 31 markets. It offers impressive statistics in many markets, including ranking as one of the best openings ever for an animated film in most of Latin America. Ditto for some markets in Europe and Asia.

On Thursday, Hollywood’s leading tracking service, National Research Group, raised its forecast for the domestic opening of Inside out 2 From $85 million to $90 million. Tracking has been down this year, especially this summer, so the decision to come out with a larger number was a big one.

Expectations increased further based on Thursday’s preview number.

Inside out 2 This could be exactly what the doctor ordered for Pixar, which has endured several years of struggle, including when the previous Disney regime decided to send three Pixar films straight to streaming.

The film has received glowing reviews, and is currently among the top five rated Pixar films on Rotten Tomatoes with a 93 percent critic score (audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is 95 percent). The sequel, directed by Kelsey Mann, brings a whole new set of emotions brought to the ‘head’ – when the story’s young heroine, Riley, becomes a teenager.

Joy, sadness, anger, fear and disgust are not sure how to feel with the arrival of anxiety, envy, boredom and embarrassment. Amy Poehler leads a voice cast that also includes Maya Hawke, Kensington Tallman, Lisa Lapira, Tony Hale, Lewis Black, Phyllis Smith, Ayo Edebiri, Lilimar, Grace Lu, Somaya Noureddine Green, Adele Exarchopoulos, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan, and Paul. Walter Hauser and Yvette Nicole Brown.

June 14, 8pm PT: Updated with revised opening estimates.
