Microsoft appears to be preparing new Xbox storage options that are expandable from other manufacturers. new Western Digital 1TB Expansion Card For Xbox Series S/X spotted early on Best Buy for $179.99. It’s the first time we’ve seen an expandable Xbox storage not made by Seagate.
Microsoft originally launched the Xbox Expandable Storage Cards nearly three years ago with the Xbox Series S/X consoles. The 1TB cards were At $219.99 It is manufactured exclusively by Seagate. While we’ve seen 512GB and 2TB options appear from Seagate, prices have remained stubbornly high, despite PS5 consoles’ comparable storage space dropping dramatically.
An additional manufacturer of Xbox expandable storage is desperately needed, and we hope it helps push prices in the right direction. This Best Buy listing for the Western Digital C50 1TB Expansion Card is $40 less than Seagate model. At $179.99, it’s still pretty expensive for 1TB of storage, especially when you can find the Samsung 980 Pro 1TB PCIe Gen4 drive. for $79.99 now.
Microsoft decided to use a special storage for Xbox Series X / S consoles, which makes installation more convenient for consumers. But pricing suffered with just one manufacturer. Sony has instead opted for a standard expandable M.2 SSD storage slot, which allows PS5 owners to use a variety of drives on the market. You can even use slower PCIe Gen4 drives on the PS5.
It’s not clear when Western Digital’s new 1TB expansion card for Xbox will be available. The Best Buy listing doesn’t have pre-order dates, so we’ve reached out to both Western Digital and Microsoft for comment on the listing.
