Google Photos is making it easier for users to maintain backups of their photo and video collections with a new export option that focuses only on newly added content. The update expands the capabilities of Google Takeout, offering a more efficient way to keep copies of media libraries without repeatedly downloading entire archives.
For users who store years of memories in Google Photos, the change could significantly reduce the time, bandwidth, and storage space required to maintain secondary backups.
Google Introduces Incremental Takeout for Photos
Exporting data from Google Photos through Google Takeout has been available for years, but the process has traditionally required users to download their entire library at once.
For people with large collections of photos and videos, a full export could involve massive file sizes and lengthy download times. Repeating that process regularly to keep backups up to date was often inconvenient and resource-intensive.
Google is now addressing that challenge with a new feature called Incremental Takeout for Photos.
How the New Export System Works
The feature begins with a complete export of a user’s selected photos and albums. After that initial backup, future scheduled exports include only content that has been added, uploaded, backed up, created, or edited since the last successful export.
According to Google:
Full initial export: Your first scheduled export contains all your selected photos and albums.
Future exports: The next exports in your schedule include items uploaded, backed up, created, or edited since your last successful backup. This saves you time and storage space.
By exporting only new or modified files, the system eliminates the need to repeatedly download duplicate content.
Easier Backup Management for Large Libraries
The update is particularly useful for users who maintain additional copies of their Google Photos library on external drives, personal servers, or other storage platforms.
Rather than managing recurring downloads of an entire photo collection, users can now receive smaller exports containing only recent changes. This streamlined approach makes long-term backup management more practical, especially for those with extensive libraries of high-resolution photos and videos.
Scheduled Exports Available Every Two Months
Users can access the new option through Google Takeout by selecting only Google Photos as the export category.
Once configured, scheduled exports can be delivered every two months over a one-year period. Export files can also be generated in sizes of up to 50GB, helping users manage large collections more efficiently.
A More Practical Way to Preserve Photo Libraries
While the update does not change Google Photos’ core cloud backup functionality, it offers a more convenient method for users who want independent copies of their media. By focusing on newly added and updated content after an initial export, Incremental Takeout reduces the burden of maintaining ongoing backups.
The feature represents a small but meaningful improvement for Google Photos users, providing a more efficient way to keep personal photo and video archives synchronized and protected over time.
