In addition to Google no longer updating third-party smart displays, the Nest Hub is set to lose voice assistant apps and games in June, and users are now seeing a warning before then.

Conversational actions date back to 2016 as the first way third parties could develop the Google Assistant. Later, Google added support for touch input with Interactive Canvas, which led to many games.

These Nest Hub games, as well as educational stories and experiences, are due to go away in June 2023. They often launched with a “Hey Google, talk to [X]Or via the Games tab on smart displays.

Today this section shows a “Games will be stopped” card/message: You can still ask me things like “What does an elephant sound like?”

Google is removing support for Conversational Actions as it focuses Assistant on Android. App Actions is intended to allow developers to add voice control to existing Android apps rather than creating a completely independent experience that was device independent. It works on Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, Google / Android TV, and even cars (cars / cars).

Last June, Google said it would “continue to invest in all the popular Assistant experiences users love, like timers, media, home automation, connections, and more.” The company also told us that it remains focused on building family experiences. The move was made prior to the ongoing AI boom that the Assistant team has been tasked with developing.
