So far no one has been able to beat Destiny 2’s final form, and it’s now the tallest ever (update: someone did)

to update: A team has now claimed to have beaten the raid, off-stream. Parabellum, and an unknown band. Bungie confirms.

The original article follows:

Good morning everyone, no, no one has beaten the Last Wish raid in Destiny 2 yet, Salvation’s Edge, which just surpassed The Last Wish, making it the longest first attempt in the world at over 18 hours.

There are a few teams in the final battle against the Witness including community legends such as Dato, Saltigrippo And Professional tennis players. However, the problem is that all of these teams are so determined to be the ones that win, that they have done their best to protect their strategies from each other.

While yesterday’s eight-hour fourth showdown had these teams muting their microphones and blurring out parts of their screens containing buffs and buffs, all of the top teams have now gone into complete blackout mode. ATP displays a still image. Dato has a camera just for himself and he is looking at the screen. Saltegreppo has been streaming the actual fight on mute for a while, but it’s gone dark now. The closest thing we see now in a boss fight is the reflection of colored lights on Dato’s face.

I understand Why this happens. These teams desperately want to be the first to complete the most important and difficult raid in Destiny history. But for this to be an exciting community event, it has stopped being so. It’s also possible that they’re offline, since at best we can hear some combat sounds. Often not even that.

There has been a call to implement “rules” around this, but that would be largely unenforceable as that would force anyone trying to beat the raid to stream the raid, and it’s always been the case that you can play private and win that way, meaning That no one is excluded from trying. Not sure what the answer is here.

As for the raid itself, many have described it as the best ever in Destiny. The first encounter took a long time for many of the teams, including the initially most-watched broadcast team Aztecross which attracted 100,000 viewers, but the four puzzle room stunned all the teams for eight hours, and most of them are still there. Given all this silence, I have no idea how these mechanisms work.

Now, with the boss, before it all goes dark, there seems to be a very quick Instagram deletion mechanic where The Witness casts a death spell if you don’t do… something. I heard that Dato’s team may have figured out how to use DPS, but I’m not sure if that’s true. if The end may be in sight, but 18 hours later, these guys aren’t sleeping, thinking or playing as well as they could. Looking at over 24 hours to complete, we’ve seen this before with some teams, but yes, in terms of first place in the world, this is now the longest. At some point I wonder if Bungie will start worrying about player health. None of these finalist teams will stop no matter what, not after all.

I have mixed feelings about how this happened. The length and difficulty are great and it seems to fit the raid all the time. But the viewing experience for the top teams has now gone from not-so-great to almost unbearable, and yet 70,000 people are actually sitting down to watch Dato’s face. Datto winning the final raid race after nearly so many firsts would be one of the best stories in Destiny history. I just wish we could see it.
